TrueNAS Launches Version 25.04.0 Fangtooth Featuring Enhanced Performance and Unified Upgrade Path

TrueNAS has officially launched version 25.04.0, codenamed “Fangtooth,” which introduces significant enhancements aimed at both Community and Enterprise users. This release consolidates features from TrueNAS CORE and SCALE, presenting a unified upgrade path for those utilizing earlier versions, specifically SCALE 24.10 and CORE 13.x.

The Fangtooth release is a result of extensive feedback from over 7,000 community testers who participated in the beta and release candidate phases. This collaborative effort has led to improvements in performance, security, and storage integration, making it an ideal choice for users seeking to deploy the latest features.

Key Features and Improvements #

Fangtooth is built on the robust foundation of its predecessor, TrueNAS 24.10 “Electric Eel,” which was widely adopted for its integrated Docker support and improved performance. The new version offers over 1,000 enhancements, including approximately 160 bug fixes. Notable features include:

  • Linux Kernel 6.12: Enhanced hardware support.
  • Fast Deduplication: Reduces data footprint, particularly beneficial for all-NVMe TrueNAS models.
  • Accelerated RAID-Z Expansion: Offers a 5X speed increase in utilizing added capacity.
  • Virtualization Enhancements: LXC containers and QEMU/KVM virtualization with experimental features for improved capabilities.

The release also includes security upgrades and advanced networking features, enhancing both performance and user experience.

Unification of TrueNAS CORE and SCALE #

A significant aspect of Fangtooth is the unification process of TrueNAS CORE and SCALE into a common Community Edition and Enterprise version. This transition aims to streamline user experience and provide a cohesive platform for all TrueNAS users.

Future Updates #

Select TrueNAS Enterprise appliances equipped with the new features from TrueNAS 25.04 are available for order. Current Enterprise customers will receive recommendations for updates in Q2 2025.
